International Yoga Day
International Yoga day has been celebrated across the world on the 21 st June, since 2015.
This special day is celebrated annually, with the theme of 2023 being ‘Humanity’.
Through advanced technology and social media platforms soaring, we should be in a place
where social connectivity is easier than ever. That being said, human interaction and
physical connection is at an all-time low with 45% of adults stating that they have feelings of
loneliness, despite the social connection around them.
The 21 st of June 2023 was also the mid-year mark of the summer solstice, the longest day in
the year. Despite the glorious long evening sunshine we had, this mark point can trigger
feelings of a downward spiral in some as the days become shorter and the evenings grow
darker. The pending gloom of winter may spike feelings of anxiety and depression, so during
this time remember to reach out to both the people you hold closest to you as well as the
distant neighbour who may not have as big of a social circle. We are all fighting a silent
battle, so if there is one thing I can urge you to be in this world, then be kind and stay
connected.
On a lighter note, we hosted a ‘Humanity event’ on the beautiful Crosby beach to celebrate
the occasion. People from all walks of life joined me in celebrating Yoga as a form of
reconnection with people, our breath, body and mind.
We began the evening with a handheld closed circle to breath in the ocean air and connect
with our neighbour. Following this we took a mindful stroll and chatter alongside the Marina
Lake to a secluded spot on the sand, where we joined together in a harmonious Yoga flow
and basked in the evening sunshine.
It’s safe to say we all departed the evening on a Yoga high, with full hearts and an eagerness
to return for more – watch this space for the next one!
