STEP Programme – School-Based Teacher Excellence in PE
Our Services: Tailored PE CPD Designed to Transform Staff Confidence in 10 Weeks
At Ultimate Kids, we believe that the real legacy of outstanding PE lies not only in what external providers can deliver, but in what a school’s own staff are empowered to achieve. Schools that can confidently deliver high-quality, progressive, inclusive PE lessons independently also have the long-term capacity to build a sustainable culture of movement, wellbeing, skill development and physical literacy. That belief is at the heart of our brand-new STEP Programme; a 10-week, high-impact CPD journey that equips teachers with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver PE successfully on their own.
Unlike many support models, the STEP Programme is intentionally short-term, tailored, and results-driven. It is designed bespoke for schools that want to see real, measurable progress within weeks – not vague promises after a year-long contract. Through a personalised coaching and mentoring process (delivered by Sam, our Director of People and Liam, Director of Operations, who combined have had 30+ years in the industry), teachers learn through practice, guided reflection, and expert coaching, not through theory alone.
A Smarter, More Impact-Driven Approach to PE Staff Development
Across the UK, schools invest thousands of pounds annually into outsourced PE delivery, external coaching and large-scale CPD offers that leave no lasting improvement once the contract ends. Teachers are left feeling no more confident, no more independent, and no more prepared to lead PE alone.
The STEP Programme changes that.
Our approach aligns with Sports Premium expectations for sustainable staff development, offering schools a proven method that strengthens internal capacity, reduces long-term external reliance, and provides clear documentation and evidence for funding reports, Ofsted and governors.
This is not “watch and copy” CPD. This is guided, practical upskilling that develops confidence, structure, clarity, presence and pedagogical understanding.
The STEP Journey: How it Works
The STEP Programme follows a three-phase professional development model to ensure clarity, progression and measurable outcomes:
1️⃣ Initial Assessment & Goal Setting
The journey begins with a teacher confidence audit and an in-lesson baseline observation. This allows us to identify strengths, barriers, development priorities and contextual needs. Together, we agree on a personalised development pathway that feels achievable, supportive and relevant.
2️⃣ Bespoke Development Modules
Each teacher completes a bespoke programme using four modules chosen from eight, allowing a highly tailored approach. Throughout delivery, teachers receive hands-on mentoring, modelling, shared delivery and live feedback inside their real lessons — the most powerful way to embed learning that lasts.
3️⃣ End-Point Assessment, Reflection & Certification
The programme concludes with a final observation, reflective discussion, and confidence comparison against the baseline. Schools receive a full impact report and certified completion record suitable for Sports Premium evidencing, CPD logs and performance reviews.
Eight Professional Development Modules – Schools Select Four
The programme can be tailored around skills, confidence, experience levels, lesson demands and leadership priorities. Modules include:
1. Foundations of Great PE Teaching
This module introduces the key principles of outstanding PE delivery. Teachers explore what great PE looks like, how to set clear learning intentions, and how to build lessons that are active, engaging, and purposeful.
Outcome: Stronger confidence and understanding of how to plan and deliver effective PE sessions.
2. Structuring a Successful PE Lesson
Teachers learn how to create consistent, progressive lesson structures using clear phases of learning — warm-up, skill development, application, and reflection.
Outcome: Lessons flow smoothly, learning objectives are met, and activity time is maximised.
3. Planning for Success
This module helps teachers link their lessons to curriculum objectives and long-term development goals. Staff learn to plan for progression, inclusion, and differentiation while keeping lessons purposeful and fun.
Outcome: Confident planners who can design meaningful lessons that meet both pupil and curriculum needs.
4. Coaching Methods & Teacher Presence
Teachers develop their delivery style and communication skills to engage and motivate pupils. The module explores a range of coaching methods, questioning techniques, and strategies to build presence and authority in PE.
Outcome: More confident, adaptable teachers who can effectively manage and inspire their class.
5. Behaviour Management in PE
Focused on creating calm, organised and positive environments for learning, this module introduces practical strategies to manage transitions, equipment, and behaviour while maintaining high engagement.
Outcome: PE lessons that run smoothly, with clear routines and consistent expectations.
6. Inclusion & Engagement for All
Teachers learn how to make PE accessible to every child through adaptable teaching, differentiation, and creative grouping. The focus is on building participation, confidence, and success for all pupils, including those with SEND or lower confidence.
Outcome: Inclusive, engaging PE lessons where every pupil feels valued and successful.
7. Assessment & Progress in PE
This module shows teachers how to measure learning and evidence impact using simple, effective tools. Teachers explore pupil self-assessment, feedback strategies, and how to use progress tracking to inform future planning.
Outcome: Clear understanding of pupil progress and greater ability to plan next steps effectively.
8. Competitions, Confidence & Next Steps
The final module brings everything together, helping teachers apply their learning in real-world contexts. Teachers explore how to run inclusive competitions, build sportsmanship, and continue improving beyond the programme.
Outcome: Confident teachers who can embed competition, reflection, and continued professional growth into their PE delivery.
This structure ensures that each teacher’s experience is meaningful, purposeful and relevant to their real-world needs – never generic or pre-set.
Programme Benefits

• Real-time, classroom-based mentoring – not conference-style CPD
• Clear progress tracking and measurable outcomes

Unlike other CPD models, ours does not stop at knowledge; it builds genuine competence, control, delivery quality and professional presence.
A Limited-Availability, High-Value Programme
In order to maintain exceptional quality, personalised support and professional integrity, only a limited number of STEP Programme places are available each year. High demand means that many schools secure their slot early to ensure they do not miss the opportunity for impactful staff development. If your school wishes to develop confident, independent and skilled PE teachers who can deliver with clarity, structure and enthusiasm, the STEP Programme may be the most valuable investment you make this year.
